I'm Jo, and I bake bagels (or try to).

December 26, 2018

Hi, hello, it’s been a while.

Last December I wrote a year in review, recently having moved to Marfa. I was feeling adventurous, curious, loved, and (considering I had just uprooted my life from 8-years in Austin) had a surprising sense of place and belonging.

“One year ago I had no idea I’d be living in the west Texas desert, but here we are. I don’t know where I will be one year from today, but I’m feeling very okay, and actually maybe very excited about that unknown.

Hey y’all,

It’s been a while and some of you have been poking me for Jo Bagel news and updates. I appreciate the thought and high gluten bagel love. Jo Bagel has been an important personal project of mine for over two years (and online for over a year!). When I first baked a batch with my bagel bud Lew in January 2016, I couldn’t have imagined that bagels would become such an intense part of my identity, that this project would in a way recalibrate my feelings about my...

February 22, 2018

Hi, hello!  So, I just got back from a trip to Australia and I have some wacky jetlag, which means my early mornings are ok, my middays are groggy AF, and my late nights are hyperactive Winter Olympics streaming.

Late last night (um, early this morning), I pulled up my Facebook and was met with this lil’ one year ago memory:

Turns out, one year ago I hashed out a blog post about bagels and feelings and neuroses and launched JoBagel.com!

Errrr, I absolutely spaced and t...

December 29, 2017

WARNING: this is mostly non-bagel related.

I don’t feel comfortable calling 2017 a “good” year. I mean, we inaugurated a soulless nightmare monster as president, and every marginalized group is so goddamn tired (and also so goddamn tired of saying “I’m so tired” a lot.).  But, as I reflect on the year as a whole, 2017 was incredibly important for personal growth and achievements, coupled with feeling slightly more fearless facing the uncertainties of life trajectories....

December 19, 2017

Hey all!  I know it's been a hot minute since I last wrote anything.  When I'm negligent with blogging, or truly, when I'm negligent at communicating with anyone, it's difficult to even figure out, well, where to begin?  The past few months I've moved, I've traveled, I've met amazing people, I've baked (wonderfully and terribly... elevation is a thing.), I've explored the new landscape I call home.  Throughout all of this, I find myself in moments that fill me with su...

"Jo Bagel is a bagel baking project in Austin, Texas"

So, hi, hello! I have some news, and part of that news involves changing this here description of Jo Bagel.

The longer version:

This has been an important, trying, exciting, informative year for me in a number of ways. It's not particularly shocking to say 2017 has been tough for any sensible person in this universe (i.e. navigating the nightmare...

August 9, 2017

Hey friends! I'm back from my desert adventures and have so many things I want to tell you about desert pools, hot springs, Meow Wolf, Larry McMurtry, desert bagels... but I'm keeping this short!

Exciting news! My first bagel pop-up is this Saturday at Spokesman

Yes, Friday afternoon I'll be kneading and rolling dough into about 170 bagels, finding a way to fit them all in my fridge, and waking up at the crack of dawn to boil and bake 'em. I'm excited and terrif...

July 12, 2017

Hi! Personal non-bagel related anecdote time. A couple weeks ago, I had a consultation with a speech pathologist. For years I’ve known that in combination with anxiety, my breathing patterns are not quite the best, and when anxiety is high, I get LOUD. You may say to yourself “ehhhh better to project than to get super quiet, right?”, and yeah, having a loud voice has been pretty great for karaoke, or drawing attention to a crowd of party people, but when coupled with...

April 6, 2017

Last week, this article about the psychological and emotional benefits of baking for others made the baking blog rounds (which I found through Joy the Baker's weekly writeup "Let It Be Sunday!”). For anyone who winds up being a baker in their friend group for all things birthdays, picnics, celebrations, I suspect when you read this article, you were nodding and saying “yes, yes, it me” aloud to your computer monitor, like I was. The points addressed in the articl...

March 23, 2017

Well, perhaps it was a bit insane to launch my bagel baking blog just before I journeyed to two of the biggest conferences for my day job (GDC & SXSW). Phew. Rest assured, I’m alive and baking bagels, amongst many of the other things I emotionally-bake throughout the week (and attempt to resist emotionally-eating). This morning, just a scribble of thoughts (which you’re gonna find from time to time on Jo Bagel. I warned you, bagels & feelings.). Stay tuned in coming w...
